The 2022 FIFA World Cup begins today as hosts Qatar take on Ecuador in the opening match of Group A and has all the details on how to watch the curtain-raiser live.

The 2022 World Cup finally kicks off today as hosts Qatar face Ecuador in the curtain raiser of the first-ever winter tournament.

Felix Sanchez is in charge of the Qataris as the former Barcelona academy coach steers them into their first major tournament. Meanwhile for Ecuador, captained by former West Ham and Everton striker Enner Valencia are back on the world stage for the first time since 2014.

If either country want to put pressure on the juggernauts in Group A, the 2022 World Cup opener could be a vital time to score points on the board.

Netherlands and Senegal get their tournament underway tomorrow. But with two stars leading the way in Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, a lot of the pre-tournament consensus is the European giants and the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions should seal their place in the knockout rounds.

How to watch Qatar vs Ecuador
Prior to Qatar and Ecuador, the World Cup opening ceremony will commence at 3pm. BBC, one of the rights holders for the tournament, will be showing the coverage throughout the tournament including the opening match.

The build-up for the encounter will start from 3pm before kick-off at 4pm. Sky and Virgin Media viewers will be able to watch the action of channel 101, whilst freeview customers can view the coverage by pressing 1 on their remote.

BBC have a star-studded line-up for the November-December tournament, Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates will be presenting the coverage. Meanwhile, pundits will include Rio Ferdinand, Alan Shearer, Micah Richards as well as Premier League legends Didier Drogba, Vincent Kompany, Gilberto Silva and Pablo Zabaleta.
