Why Arteta shouted at Ramsdale as Arsenal solve their biggest problem from last season

The choice to go with Aaron Ramsdale in goal instead of Bernd Leno was perhaps the most shocking call as the team news for the Norwich encounter was published.

FB IMG 16313139323414132 The German was most likely to blame for Manchester City’s first goal, but it was primarily because to him that the score remained under 5-0. The identical thing happened against Chelsea the week before.

Ramsdale, on the other hand, was chosen for his first Premier League start since joining from Sheffield United for £24 million.

While his shot-stopping skills were not put to the test, the 23-year-old was frequently called upon with his feet and looked good throughout.

Early in the game, he performed a ‘Cruyff turn’ away from Teemu Pukki’s pressure, which felt like a sliding doors moment for his Arsenal career. Fans could have turned if something had gone wrong, but by the time the final whistle blew, they were enthusiastically cheering his name as he walked out for post-match press obligations.

Throughout the game, Ramsdale moved around to make himself a passing option, something Leno may have been accused of not doing enough of during his tenure as Arsenal’s goalkeeper.

The rookie goalkeeper definitely has his manager’s trust, as he was yelling at him late in the game, pointing to the exact spot where he wanted a goal kick taken. The 23-year-old followed his boss’s directions to the letter.

Arteta was effusive in his appreciation of Ramsdale after the game, but he hesitated to say who the number one ‘keeper is just yet.

“I thought he was fantastic,” the Spaniard stated of his summer signing. “It’s not only what he did technically; it’s what he transmits, his energy.” I thought his chemistry with the backline and how he reacts was outstanding.

“We have two outstanding goalkeepers on our team. Never forget what Bernd has done for us and how terrific of a goalkeeper he is. I had to make a decision today, and I believed Aaron would be the best choice. We had to make a decision, just like in any other position, and that is what we did today.”

This season, the struggle for the spot between the sticks at the Emirates seems likely to be fierce, and it will be fascinating to see who emerges victorious.
