The 2021/22 season may be ending on somewhat of a sour note for Arsenal with a top-four finish looking unlikely, but the club have been active in attempts to bolster the squad ahead of the summer transfer window.
One deal that has been ‘accidentally’ announced is that of Matt Turner’s seemingly imminent move. As previously reported by football.london, the Gunners had been looking to confirm the signing of the New England Revolution goalkeeper when he flies over to complete a medical in June, thus making him the club’s first signing of the summer.
However, via the 27-year-old USMNT’s Instagram story from his wedding, it would appear that the cat is already out of the bag as a photo showed a bouquet of red and white flowers along with a card that came with it which reads: ‘Congratulations on your wedding day! Best wishes, From everyone at Arsenal FC.’
All that remains is for Arsenal to officially announce Turner’s move so he can kick-start his quest to usurp Aaron Ramsdale for the number one spot next season. But who is next on the list for manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer in north London in terms of incomings as well as outgoings?
Well, amid links to the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Aaron Hickey and Youri Tielemans, football.londonhave revealed that a deal has been agreed with Brazilian side Sao Paulo to sign winger Marquinhos who will join the club at some point in the summer following extensive talks with Edu.
Furthermore, it’s understood the deal will cost the Gunners in the region of £3m and the 19-year-old’s arrival will not have any impact on the club’s plans to bolster the first-team squad before deadline day at the end of August.
Again, similar to Turner, whilst there is no official announcement of Marquinhos joining the club, eagle-eyed fans are picking up on any signs that suggest the deal is effectively done and the teenager may have dropped the biggest hint yet with his social media activity.
As spotted by @AfcZak__ on Twitter, Marquinhos has recently started following Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli on Instagram. In addition, below is the Sao Paulo youngster’s profile page where he has since been followed back by his compatriot as well as academy prospect Miguel Azeez.
If Marquinhos does join Arsenal, he can look to emulate Martinelli for both club and country as the latter quickly established himself in Unai Emery’s plans after impressing in pre-season following his £6m move from Ituano in the summer of 2019 and has since won two caps for the senior Brazil national team as well as being a regular under Arteta.
A talented young forward who mainly operates as a winger – but can also play through the middle – Marquinhos’ prefers to play from the right so – similar to Bukayo Saka – he can cut inside on his favoured left foot, which would then create the option for him and Martinelli to start in the same Arsenal side.
