Some Arsenal supporters have reacted to Michael Carrick’s surprise decision to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of the Manchester United starting XI against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
The 36-year-old has been the one bright spark in a rather poor start to the season for the Red Devils which ultimately cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job following a 4-1 defeat at Watford last weekend.
With 10 goals to his name across all competitions – including four in the Premier League – many were expecting to see Ronaldo’s name on the Man United teamsheet to face the Blues.
And whilst his name was on the team sheet, he was listed as a substitute rather than as a starter.
When asked to explain this decision, Carrick, the United caretaker boss, insisted he had to freshen things up with the games coming thick and fast for his side.
“A few tweaks and changes to freshen things up,” he said. “Cristiano Ronaldo is your standout name (to be on the bench). I have had a good chat with Cristiano and he was great.”
Ronaldo did make an appearance off the bench, replacing Jadon Sancho in the second half as the visitors left Stamford Bridge with a point.
But with the Portugal international well-rested, it could spell danger for United’s next opponents – which just so happens to be Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Judging by the reaction of some Gunners fans on social media, they’re not exactly thrilled about the idea of Benjamin White and Gabriel Magalhaes facing a fresh Ronaldo.
