After going down twice, the Blues delivered the ultimate soccer punch to down the championship side and 3-2 was how it ended on the night.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel once again made some tactically expert decisions that helped the premier league side defeat their opponents.

Wingers Dropping Deep In Pockets:

Chelsea were dealt a rude shock right at the start of last night’s game as Luton took the lead just after two minutes.

Thomas Tuchel’s charges had to crawl their way back into the game and their wingers played a key role in this.

Mason Mount and Timo Werner were the wingers on the night and they often dropped deep into the pockets of spaces to get the ball, thereby giving room for the wing-backs and a couple of midfielders like Saúl to run in behind.

The movement of the Chelsea wingers did cause problems for the Luton defenders on the night especially in the first half as Mason Mount created the most chances.

Substitution Of Callum Hudson-Odoi In The Second Half:

Callum Hudson-Odoi started at right wing-back for Chelsea last night but the Englishman didn’t really assert himself in the game.

Hudson-Odoi who is well known for his abilities to take on and beat his marker looked devoid of confidence as he struggled to influence the game from the right hand side of Chelsea’s attack.

Thomas Tuchel rightly read the situation and ringed a couple of changes that saw Harvey Vale and Christian Pulisic come on for Hudson-Odoi and Kenedy respectively. The two substitutions had an effect on the game as Pulisic looked more threatening than Hudson-Odoi with Vale popping up in spaces to link the attack nicely.

Introduction Of Reece James/Formation Switch:

Thomas Tuchel had to win last night’s game from the bench and his final substitution saw right-back Reece James replace midfielder Jorginho.

Reece James introduction meant Ruben Loftus-Cheek who had played at centre-back until that time could step into his favourite midfield position as Chelsea could now switch to a back four with James and Saúl as full-backs while Rudiger and Sarr remained as centre-backs.

Loftus-Cheek immediately after the switch had the opportunity run and drive at the Luton defence from midfield and Reece James playing on a right flank that already had Christian Pulisic and sometimes Harvey Vale or Timo Werner coming to create overloads eventually did the magic for Chelsea.

The winning goal came through intricate combination play on the right hand side of Chelsea’s attack.

Pulisic to James who goes central to Loftus-Cheek and the midfielder’s return pass to the right side of the box was left to roll by Harvey Vale for the run of Timo Werner who then squares one time for the finish of Lukaku. Intelligent combination play.
