After 10 matches unbeaten in all competitions, Arsenal’s true progress will be put to the test by Liverpool at Anfield this weekend.
The Gunners have picked up wins against Leicester City, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in recent weeks, but Jurgen Klopp’s side will offer a different challenge.
The Reds have played 17 matches in all competitions this season, and they have only lost once. Arsenal will have to perform at their best to pick up a result, but they have one weapon in particular which could prove to be decisive on Merseyside.
So far this season, Arteta’s men rank joint-top of the Premier League – alongside Liverpool – for goals scored from set-pieces, having found the net six times in total.
It is an interesting strength which seems to have coincided with the addition of Nicolas Jover from Manchester City during the summer, who was brought to the Emirates Stadium by Arteta in July.
Jover is a set-piece expert who initially emerged at Brentford before making the switch to the Etihad and was called a “genius” by Mads Buttgereit, who worked alongside him at Brentford and now works with the German national team. Since he began working at Arsenal, the Gunners have notably improved on the attacking end of dead-ball situations.
It bodes well for facing Liverpool on Saturday. West Ham United beat the Reds before the international break after scoring twice from corners, while also hitting the bar on one occasion.
