The Arsenal shirt numbers available to Serge Gnabry if Edu completes summer transfer swoop

Arsenal are set for a busy summer transfer window, with a number of first-team additions expected in the coming weeks

Arsenal spent more than any other Premier League club last summer, splashing in excess of £140million on six first-team players as technical director Edu added a number of young players to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The likes of Martin Odegaard, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu all joined the Arteta revolution as the north Londoners finished fifth in the Premier League, missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification by just two points. Still, the Gunners are expected to have yet another busy summer transfer window, with a striker, a winger and a central midfielder all likely to be targeted.

Former Hale End star Serge Gnabry is the latest name to be linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium given his ongoing Bayern Munich contract talks have seemingly stalled. With that being said, football.london takes a closer look at what numbers could be free for the German international if he is to sign.

Gnabry currently dons the number seven shirt for Bayern, although that number is currently occupied by England international Bukayo Saka at Arsenal. In fact, none of the numbers between 1-11 are free at the north London club but the iconic no.14, previously worn by the likes of Thierry Henry, Theo Walcott and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang isn’t occupied by anyone at this moment in time.

Numbers currently available: 12, 14, 21, 27, 28, 29, 31

However, the Gunners are expected to offload a number of first-team players this summer and the number nine jersey will likely be free in a month when Alexandre Lacazette’s contract expires this summer. Hector Bellerin, Alex Runarsson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Pablo Mari, Reiss Nelson and Folarin Balogun all spent time away from the club last season on loan, with a number of those now expected to leave permanently this summer, which would mean their kit numbers would become available.

Second-choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno and club-record signing Nicolas Pepe both struggled for game time last term, with the two Unai Emery signings both heavily linked with a summer move away from Arsenal as well.

Numbers that could become available with transfers and/or loans: 1 (Leno), 2 (Bellerin), 9 (Lacazette) 13 (Runarsson), 15 (Maitland-Niles), 19 (Pepe), 22 (Mari), 24 (Nelson), 26 (Balogun).
