Ricketts family breaks silence, releases statement amidst racism allegations and #NoToRicketts campaign

The Rainne group charged with completing the sale of Chelsea Football Club will release the final shortlist of bidders in no distant time and one of the names that has dominated the headlines is the Ricketts family.

The owners of Chicago Cubs baseball team have dominated the headlines for the wrong reasons as a leaked email from 80-year old Patriarch Joe Ricketts has resurfaced and made the rounds in the past few days.

In the email, Joe Ricketts made some islamophobic comments and this is amidst claims that the family had sponsored the campaigns of politicians in the US who didn’t share the views of inclusivity and anti-discrimination.

Even though Joe Ricketts had already apologised a few years back and is not involved in the bid to buy Chelsea, the club’s fans have risen against the family’s attempt by trending the #NoToRickets campaign on social media and the Ricketts family, have now come out to reiterate ‘in the strongest possible terms’ their stance against racism and islamophobia.

“Our family rejects any form of hate in the strongest possible terms. Racism and Islamophobia have no place whatsoever in our society.” They said in a statement released earlier today

“We have developed deep and abiding partnerships with the Muslim community in Chicago, as well as with all communities of colour.

“Respect for diversity and inclusion are central to our family’s values.”

“If we prevail in our bid for Chelsea, we commit to the Club and to the fans that we will actively promote these values.,”
