Chelsea sporting director Petr Cech has spoken on his club’s UCL round of 16 draw.
Chelsea finished second in their champions league group and were drawn against French champions Lille who won their own champions league group.
It looks an easy fixture on paper but Petr Cech has warned the Blues not to get carried away as Lille are not just an easy side to beat.
“Any opponent you have to respect because they are in the last 16 not by chance but because they have the quality.” Cech told the Chelsea website.
“Also, there is a quite long time before the last 16 ties are played so the teams who are now in form can be completely out of form by then or vice versa.”
“The draw can look one way on paper initially but when you play almost three months later then everything might look completely different.”
Chelsea surely have a lot of fixtures before they square up against Lille in February, hence, there’s no gainsaying that form could turnaround and with the away goal rule no longer in use, this year’s UCL competition could be a lot more interesting.
Chelsea cruised past Atletico Madrid at the round of 16 stage en route to their UCL triumph last season and they’ll be hoping for a repeat this time around.
