Arsenal have reportedly made signing Alexander Isak a priority after Mikel Arteta has hinted at Alexandre Lacazette’s departure at the end of the season.
The Swedish striker has been on the Gunners’ radar for a while and after becoming a success at La Liga side Real Sociedad, Spanish outlet Fichajes claim that he is Arsenal’s main transfer target.
Lacazette’s contract runs out at the end of the season and there has seemed to be no progress in the renewal of his contract, which confirms his departure if a deal is unable to be reached.
Arteta didn’t sound overly confident about the contract extension in his press conference ahead of the game against Liverpool, as he said: “I don’t know there is so much stuff on his contract. What I can say is I’m really happy with what Lacazette is doing.
“We’re not going to be talking about any of that until the end of the season.”
The Frenchman was put on the transfer list before the start of the season, but no club came in with an offer that was suitable for Arsenal.
However, with his impressive turn of form in the last few weeks, interest in the striker would have certainly spiked, especially with the opportunity to sign him on a free transfer.
Lacazette is not the only striker whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season, as Eddie Nketiah also has less than 10 months remaining on his current deal.
If both strikers depart from the club, then this will leave the Gunners short on forwards, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Folarin Balogun being the only strikers left within the squad.
This opens the door for a major attacking signing such as Isak, who the club should certainly make a priority.
He has 5 goals and 1 assist in 852 minutes of La Liga and Europa League action so far this season and is a major reason why his current club Real Sociedad sits at the top of the league.
