Gabriel Martinelli must disprove Mikel Arteta’s biggest fear to take Arsenal chance

This season has not quite gone to plan so far for Gabriel Martinelli.

The Brazilian was tipped by many to kick on after a year of frustratingly finding himself behind the likes of Willian in the pecking order following his return from a six month injury layoff.

Instead though he has not played a single minute in the Premier League since starting the Gunners’ second fixture of the season against Chelsea and was overlooked as a replacement for Bukayo Saka as the England winger came off injured against Brighton with Ainsley Maitland-Niles preferred instead.

Now he is also a doubt for Monday’s clash against Crystal Palace after sustaining an injury last week, although Mikel Arteta revealed that he likely wouldn’t have been starting the game anyway.

“Well, because of the amount of players that we have in that position first of all,” said the Spaniard explaining the reason for this.

Arteta has always been keen to urge caution when it comes to the development of the Brazilian. He is after all only 20-years-of-age and has already suffered a long-term injury set back in his short career.
