It has been a roller coaster year for Arsenal football club and its fans, with a summer of upheaval, time in the relegation zone, protests against the ownership and that barely covers a few months.
For the second consecutive year, Reach is running the Fans’ Footballer of the Year award, with fans choosing from four nominees – selected by our resident Arsenal expert Chris Wheatley – to crown Arsenal’s best performer in 2021.
The definition of Footballer of the Year is up to the fans. It could be the biggest star, it could be the player that has had the biggest impact on the team or even a player that has completely taken you by surprise from your initial expectations.
The England shot stopper has become a revelation since joining from Sheffield United for a fee totalling £30million in the summer.
Arsenal were in advanced talks with Ramsdale and the initial reaction to his signing was largely negative, but he has gone on to usurp Bernd Leno as no.1 goalkeeper.
His save to deny Leicester midfielder James Maddison’s free-kick in a recent Premier League win was described as one of the best saves in recent years by Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel.
White has settled into life at Arsenal with ease whilst forging a formidable partnership with Gabriel in defence.
The £50million summer signing has impressed with his distribution and ability to play out from the back.
His versatility is another reason why Arteta signed him understands that he regularly gives advice to the younger players at London Colney.
The Brazilian centre back has improved his English skills and returned from injury to become one of Arsenal’s most consistent performances in defence.
He is one of the first names on the team sheet and has drawn praise from all quarters for his aerial ability and dominance at the back, alongside the aforementioned White.
Emile Smith Rowe:
Mikel Arteta challenged Smith Rowe to add goals and assists to his game if he wants to be considered among the top creators in the Premier League.
The England international has done exactly that after netting five goals in fifteen appearances across all competitions. He’s also received his first call-up to the England senior squad following his impressive performances this season and grabbed a debut goal to boot.
So, after a tumultous year for the Gunners, be sure to have your say on who has impressed you the most since January 1st 2021.
Whether it’s the exciting emergence of Hale End hero Emile Smith Rowe, the swashbuckling runs of Ben White, the salmon-like leaps of Ramsdale or the sheer tenacity of Gabriel that’s impressed you – be sure to get stuck into the debate with fellow Gooners by following on social media and letting us know your choice in the comments below as well.
The results of the vote for both Arsenal and the overall Fans’ Footballer of the Year will be announced on Monday, December 30. Keep a close eye on the social channels and the Brettbarley.com website to make sure you’re first to find out.
