Arsenal have previously expressed interest in the Brighton star, but there was no indication that the club would act on that desire during the summer transfer window.
In order to enhance their midfield options, the Gunners choose to extend Granit Xhaka’s contract at the Emirates Stadium and recruit Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht.
They may come to regret not making a formal bid for Bissouma, especially after the 24-year-old stated that he believes he is better than any of Arsenal’s current crop – or any other Premier League side – and that he is aiming to become the best midfielder in the league.
In an interview with the BBC, Bissouma was asked who he thinks is the best by his former Seagulls teammate Glenn Murray. “I don’t want to be arrogant, but that’s my mind,” Bissouma said. I believe it is me since I am constantly striving to be the greatest.
“I know there are many good midfielders in the Premier League, but for me, it’s me because it gives me the confidence and energy to work hard and show people that ‘I’m here, I’m Bissouma.’ I just want to be focused on football and perform well in every game, every week, to help my team win, and the rest will be decided in the future.”
Bissouma, who has been with Brighton since the summer of 2018 after joining for about £15 million from Lille, continues to impress, making his 100th appearance for the club in their 1-0 win against Brentford at the weekend.
It will be debatable if he genuinely is the best midfielder in the league, but if he continues to improve, he will pique the curiosity of some of the world’s best clubs.
