Chelsea’s 4-0 trashing of Juventus further faults big transfer decision Chelsea made in the summer

Chelsea trashed Juventus 4-0 in last night’s champions league fixture to go top of group H.

The Blues were in a class of their own last night and the result was Juventus’ biggest lost in champions league history and the first time the Bianconnerri were losing 4-0 since the 2003/04 season when they famously lost by that scoreline to AS Roma.

Chelsea have scored goals for fun lately despite the absence of key players in attack like Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner and I’d want to believe that it is no coincidence that Chelsea are scoring a lot of goals without the former.

Romelu Lukaku joined Chelsea from Inter in the summer for £97.5 million but he’s not really found his mojo for the Blues as he’s scored just four goals in morning more than 10 appearances in all competitions and he had gone six games without scoring and assisting before he got injured in the champions league game against Malmo late last month.

Lukaku has seemingly failed to find a connection with his Chelsea teammates this season and his presence in games have been highlighted to be somewhat of a limitation to Chelsea’s attacking flow and this was highlighted in Chelsea’s champions league game against Juventus in September where the 28-year old was marked out of the game by the Juventus defence hence making the Chelsea attack toothless in a game that ended 1-0 in favour of the Old Lady.

Speaking before last night’s return leg, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri even implied that Chelsea were a more dangerous side without Lukaku.

“With [Romelu] Lukaku they play in one way, without counter-attackers and fewer points of reference.” Allegri said while speaking in his pre-match press conference.

The Italian’s fears were all but confirmed last night as his side just couldn’t cope with a rampaging Chelsea side throughout the game.

Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Timo Werner were all on target for the Blues last night. Thomas Tuchel’s charges were also impressive over the weekend as they beat Leicester City 3-0 and it is now 23 goals scored by Chelsea in the space of less than one month without Lukaku and it begs the question, Did Chelsea really need to sign Lukaku in the summer? Well, only time will tell.

It seems Thomas Tuchel has not quite found a system that would make Lukaku bang goals and until he does that it would seem as though a whooping sum of £97.5 million has gone down the drain.
