It’s been largely reported over the past few months that Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is a target for Barcelona and reports even emerged about a couple of months back about Barca agreeing a contract with the Spanish full-back.

Matter-of-factly though, Azpilicueta is still a Chelsea player and his contract which was supposed to expire in June has reportedly been extended.

This is according to Mundo Deportivo who have just reported that Azpilicueta’s contract extension clause in his Chelsea contract was activated ahead of the sanctions placed on the club and it has kicked in because he has made certain amount of appearances this season. A report corroborated by Matt Law.

However, Azpilicueta’s contract extension doesn’t necessarily mean he will stay at Chelsea beyond this summer as Barcelona want to sign the player at all costs, and are willing to negotiate a transfer with Chelsea, as per Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish outlet further reports that Cesar Azpilicueta really wants to join Barcelona to be part of Xavi’s project, as the manager has asked the club to make an effort to sign his former national team mate.

The ball is now in Chelsea’s court though, as they now have the ultimate decision to make in regards to their captain’s future due to the recent contract extension.
