Chelsea and Arsenal could go head-to-head in the summer transfer market for Napoli attacker Victor Osimhen.
Since arriving in Naples from Lille in 2020, the Nigerian has found form, scoring 16 goals in 36 appearances for the Italian side, including six goals in as many games at the start of this season.
As a result, his name has been connected with a number of top European clubs, including Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Ciro Venerato, an Italian journalist, has reported that Chelsea are among those who appreciate Osimhen’s meteoric rise.
“Osimhen is already worth triple, the Nigerian is liked by Chelsea, Real Madrid, PSG, and Manchester City,” he told Rai 2.
Osimhen has been likened to current Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, and has been tipped to match the Belgian’s lofty goalscoring levels, with the latter having returned to Stamford Bridge in a £98 million deal earlier this summer.
Former Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has indicated that Nigerian striker Ola Aina might fill Lukaku’s shoes in the future.
Osimhen may have already been playing in England prior to his recent goal-scoring spree.
In the summer of 2020, Arsenal were heavily connected with the 22-year-old, but he chose to join Napoli for £52 million.
Paolo Bargiggia, an Italian journalist, has exposed how close a switch to the Emirates Stadium was.
“You must know that Arsenal was after Osimhen: he was very near to the Gunners, but Cristiano Giuntoli spoke with Aurelio De Laurentiis, and the president broke the delay: therefore Napoli decided and managed to buy him,” he continued.
Osimhen’s current contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona has just under four years left on it.
