Breaking: Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe undergoes surgery as extent of injury revealed

The youngster has undergone surgery for an injury that has plagued his season so far.

Arsenal have announced that star attacker Emile Smith Rowe has undergone major surgery to help recover from a long-term injury.

The 22-year-old has only made four appearances so far this season, playing just 47 minutes, as an ongoing injury continues to plague him. He is yet to start a game this term after struggling through pre-season with a recurring issue that was further aggravated in the warm-down following the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier this month.

In a statement released on the club’s website, it says: “In recent months, Emile Smith Rowe has been experiencing discomfort in his groin, which has limited his training and match appearances.

“Following a significant setback at our Premier League match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on September 4, and after further specialist consultations and discussions with our medical team, Emile underwent surgery to repair a damaged tendon in his groin.

“This successful surgery took place in London in the past few days and Emile’s rehabilitation programme is already underway. We are hopeful that Emile will return to full training in December.

“Everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with Emile to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Speaking about Smith Rowe’s hampered recovery, Mikel Arteta described it is “very frustrating” earlier this month, adding: “He’s a kid that loves playing football. It’s the biggest thing in his life. And when he’s not capable of doing that, especially after the run of games and performances that he had with us the year before, it’s just difficult.

“But injuries are part of football that you’re going to get at some stage of your career. It’s how you face those difficult moments and now you make the next step.”

The promising young star had a breakout season with 10 goals and two assists in 33 league matches during the 2021/22 campaign and made his England debut last November. Since then he has played two more times and scored his first goal.

Since then Smith Rowe is yet to play again for Gareth Southgate’s side and will miss the winter World Cup, instead undergoing his own recovery over the winter.
