AST raise thousands for Arsenal Foundation in Christmas event attended by Per Mertesacker

The Arsenal Supporters’ Trust were able to raise around £3,000 for the Arsenal Foundation during a Christmas fundraiser attended by Per Mertesacker.

Despite fears over rising COVID cases, weather warnings as a result of Storm Barra, and the recent poor form of the men’s first team, hundreds turned out in order to attend the evening which was held at the Emirates Stadium.

The event began with a fascinating question and answer session with former Gunners captain Mertesacker, in which topics such as his vision for the academy, his desire to see Arsene Wenger return to the club in some capacity, the loan system and the future of Folarin Balogun were all discussed.

The German then did the draw for a raffle which featured prizes including a ball signed by some of the men’s first team squad, a home shirt signed by members of the women’s first team squad and a version of the famed bruised banana kit signed by Ian Wright.

The highlight of the evening however, came as Arsenal super fan Maria Petri serenaded Mertesacker with a version of the club’s ‘hello we are the Arsenal’ chant in German!

There was also an hour-long online version of the question and answer session that took place before the in-person event for those who were unable to attend.

“For the entire pandemic we’ve been doing virtual events to keep our members engaged and many have pro-actively thanked us for helping them with something to do,” said AST Board Member Akhil Vyas.

“We got to a stage where some members, really wanted something where they can have some fun and see other people so we put this together.

“We chose to host it at the Emirates as we knew COVID-wise, it would probably be the safest place. We also held an online version for our members who can’t make it into London.’

The money raised will go to help the Arsenal Foundation in their charitable causes both in the local community and around the world. with their work in Syrian Refugee camps in Jordan among initiatives highlighted on the night.
