Arsenal Receive Massive Transfer Boost In Pursuit Of Highly Rated £42M Forward

Barca are preparing to reinforce their squad in the New Year and, although they have identified their primary target, they still have problems to overcome.

The Spanish giants are desperately trying to rebuild under Xavi following the disastrous Ronald Koeman era.

Barca suffered the embarrassment of being knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage, while they are currently eighth in La Liga, having won just one of 16 matches.

The main area Barca needs to improve is the attack, where the retirement of Sergio Aguero has left them short of options.

Barcelona have identified Ferran Torres as the man they want, with the Manchester City forward keen on a return to his home country.

However, Torres is only 18 months into a five-year contract with Man City, following his £20.8million move from Valencia in the summer of 2020.

According to reports, that means City are asking for nearly £42m (€50m) for the 21-year-old Spanish international.

Barcelona are in the midst of a serious financial mess having made a loss of £404m (€481m) in the last financial year and picked up debts and future liabilities totalling £1.14bn (€1.35bn).

That means they desperately need to get high-earners off their wage bill to satisfy financial fair play rules before they can land Torres.

The two most obvious players that fall into this category are Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho, who both arrived at Barca in huge transfers but have failed to live up to the billing.

Dembele joined Barca in a £135.5m deal from Borussia Dortmund in August 2017, but has been hampered by injuries over the past four years.

Dembele is out of contract in July and although there have been reports of Barca renewing his deal, he could still leave in January.

Coutinho arrived in January 2018 for a fee which could rise to £142m from Liverpool, yet has been similarly underwhelming.

Despite this, reports in Spain have suggested that there is Premier League interest in Dembele and Coutinho.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are in the market for forwards, with uncertainty surrounding their current options.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been linked with an exit after losing the captaincy this week, while Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both out of contract in the summer.
