Arsenal expected a relatively quiet January transfer window and that’s exactly what the Gunners got.
The north Londoners offloaded a number of fringe players as technical director Edu looked to clear the club’s wage bill.
Only one player joined Mikel Arteta’s side this month, in the form of American defender Auston Trusty, although he will stay with MLS side Colorado Rapids until the end of the current campaign.
Arteta was looking to find a long term replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but the Spaniard was unable to bring in any strikers despite a strong interest in Dusan Vlahovic, who eventually joined Juventus instead.
With all that being said, here are the full list of ins and outs from a somewhat subdued January 20222
Auston Trusty from Colorado Rapids (January 31)
Trusty joined the Gunners on deadline day but will spend the remainder of the campaign with the aforementioned Rapids, who are also owned by Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke.
The 23-year-old is a left-sided centre-back, famed for his ball-playing skills and exceptional physical prowess.
A Rapids statement read: “The Colorado Rapids have reached an agreement with English Premier League side Arsenal FC for the transfer of defender Auston Trusty, the club announced today.
“Trusty will remain with the Rapids on loan before departing for Europe on July 17.”
Harry Clarke to Hibernian (January 6)
The first player to leave the Gunners in the January window was Hale End academy graduate Clarke.
The young defender joined Scottish side Hibernian on a temporary basis, leaving on an 18-month loan that also includes break clauses this summer and next January.
Ainsley Maitland Niles to Roma (January 8)
Fellow Hale End graduate Maitland Niles also departed the Emirates Stadium early on in the winter window, joining Jose Mourinho’s side on loan for the remainder of the season.
The England international also spent the second half of last season on loan with Premier League outfit West Brom before returning to Arteta’s side in the summer.
Folarin Balogun to Middlesbrough (January 12)
Hale End academy graduate Balogun joined Championship side Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the current campaign.
The England under-21 international is highly rated by the Gunners after signing a new long-term deal with Arteta’s side last year.
Dejan Iliev released (January 17)
Macedonian goalkeeper Iliev spent the first-half of the season on loan with Slovakian club Orion Tip Sered, although the loan was eventually cancelled by the Gunners.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy to Lincoln City (January 18)
Norton-Cuffy is highly rated within the club and has starred for Kevin Betsy’s Arsenal under-23’s in recent times and the talented youngster has since joined League One side Lincoln City on-loan until the end of the current campaign.
Sead Kolasinac to Marseille (January 18)
Arsenal fans had high hopes when Kolasinac joined from Schalke back in the summer of 2017, however, the Bosnian international struggled for consistency during his stint in the English capital.
Now, the 28-year-old has seen his contract terminated mutual consent, joining Arsenal loanees William Saliba and Mateo Guendouzi at Marseille.
Pablo Mari to Udinese (January 20)
Having not appeared in the Premier League for Arsenal since August, the Spanish centre-back has been allowed to depart the club for more regular football.
Karl Hein to Reading (January 24)
Estonian shot-stopper Hein joined Championship side Reading on loan until the end of the season.
The 19-year-old has established himself as an Estonian international in recent times and is looking for his first taste of senior football in England.
Tyreece John-Jules to Sheffield Wednesday (January 25)
Young forward John Jules spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Black pool in the championship but after struggling for regular game time he was eventually recalled by Arsenal.
The England international eventually penned a loan move to fellow Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday.
Calum Chambers to Aston Villa (January 28)
Former Southampton defender Chambers’ exit from north London was surprising to many.
The Englishman announced that he had signed a deal with Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa – penning a three-and-a-half year deal at Villa Park almost eight years after joining the Gunners.
Nikolaj Moller to Fc Den Bosch (January 31)
Young centre-forward Moller has joined Dutch Eerste Divisie side FC Den Bosch on loan for the rest of the 2021/22 campaign.
The 19-year-old returned earlier in January from a loan stint with German 3. Liga side FC Viktoria Koln, where he made 13 appearances, scoring three goals in the process.

The 20-year-old midfielder will hope to establish himself in the Tangerines first-team over the next few months.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (January 31)
Aubameyang was stripped of his captaincy duties back in December following a disciplinary breach and the Gabon international has now joined La Liga outfit Barcelona on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old arrived at the Emirates Stadium four years ago, signing from Borussia Dortmund before notching 92 goals and 21 assists in 163 games for the north London side.
