Maitland-Niles who can also play at right-back or right wing-back has however failed to really impress in Rome and his time at the Italian capital has taken a twist recently.

Sport Witness in a recent article made reference to Italian media outlet Roma Today whose Thursday feature was a story on Nicola Zalewski, a player who was handed his first start last weekend by manager José Mourinho.

According to the report, the youngster was used ‘by meritocracy and not by the emergency’ which goes to say that other first team players who can play right wing-back have not really impressed the manager.

Roma Today analyzes the situation as a ‘clear message of rejection’ to the other players in the position, including Maitland-Niles as they claim that the Englishman is not staying at Roma beyond the expiration of his loan spell this summer.

They emphasize that the 24-year-old ‘will return’ to the Emirates once this season comes to an end ‘barring twists and turns’. And with just a year left on his Arsenal contract from that point, the Gunners would most likely have to make a decision on the player.
