Authorities say a North Branford adolescent was killed after being attacked with a knife outside an East Haven elementary school on Tuesday night.
Dustin Cecarelli, 15, was the victim, according to East Haven police, and the chief medical examiner’s office determined that he died from a chest stab wound and that his death was a homicide.
Just before 6:30 p.m., police were called to a report of a fight in the Grove J. Tuttle Elementary School courtyard. Officers discovered that during a physical altercation involving multiple individuals, Cecarelli had been attacked with a knife.
According to the police, Cecarelli was attended to by the East Haven Fire Department before being brought to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he passed away.
Police reported that everyone involved in the altercation had been recognized and that there was no danger to the public.
“We care deeply for all North Branford students and we extend our sincerest sympathy to the family and friends of the student involved,” North Branford Public Schools Superintendent Scott Schoonmaker wrote in a statement. “We are committed to providing support to our students in this difficult time. School counselors, psychologists, social workers and other staff are available to assist any student who needs support as a result of this incident.”
