Legendary dancing instructor Cavette “Johnny” Cavelle passed away on May 23, 2023, at the age of 85. A beloved figure in Northeast South Dakota, he was widely recognized and highly regarded by the numerous students who had the privilege of being taught by him.
Johnny Cavelle, a dancer and dance teacher, was known for his expertise in the field. A native of Tulare, South Dakota, he spent most of his life in Groton. From a young age, he started dancing and as he grew older, his love for dance intensified.
Thirteen years ago, he retired after operating five dancing studios located in Aberdeen, Watertown, Huron, Milbank, and Redfield. The name of his company was Johnny Cavelle Dance Studies. Vicki Schnoor, Chad Hansen, and Andrea Conklin have assumed ownership of Johnny’s dance studios following his retirement.
The studios are still being managed in his honor, with a focus on collaboration for choreography, backstage assistance during performances, and costume design. Johnny was found to be an inspiration by many people.
According to sources, he possessed a talent for eliciting the finest qualities in his pupils and motivating them to follow their dreams. The instructor was described as both demanding and sensitive, with a loving demeanor.
According to several of his former students, he assisted them in acquiring confidence and self-assurance. The late Cavette “Johnny” Cavelle will always be remembered.
