At 2:45 p.m. on May 1, members of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Narcotics Task Force were reportedly conducting surveillance on a hotel room at Super 8. This was in relation to a separate investigation, as stated by investigators with LSO.

According to Sheriff Terry Wagner, members of the task force departed from their location at the hotel and relocated to the parking lot situated across the street. In a recent development, it has been reported that an LPD investigator and an NSP investigator were spotted together in a single vehicle, while another NSP investigator was seen driving a separate vehicle.

According to LSO investigators, a vehicle matching the description of a black Chevy Impala with New York license plates, driven by an individual identified as Abney, reportedly trailed members of the task force from a motel to a parking lot.

As per Sheriff Wagner’s statement, the task force members, who were donning vests and badges that identified them as law enforcement, stepped out of their vehicles to establish contact with Abney.

According to Sheriff Wagner, the task force members issued verbal commands to Abney, instructing him to exit his vehicle. However, the task force members assert that Abney failed to comply with their orders.

According to Sheriff Wagner, Abney allegedly brandished a 9mm pistol and aimed it at the officers.

According to LSO investigators, a single round was discharged from the pistol that Abney was carrying. As per investigators, a trooper and an LPD officer exchanged gunfire. According to Sheriff Wagner, Abney sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Sheriff Wagner, the investigators did not have body cameras and the police cruiser dash cameras were not in use. A person named Abney was taken to a hospital in critical condition due to gunshot wounds.

According to Sheriff Wagner, Abney has connections to Lincoln and had been present in the region for approximately seven days.

According to investigators, the pistol found in Abney’s possession had been reported stolen from Norfolk on Monday. According to Sheriff Wagner, the timeline of the pistol’s theft remains unclear.

According to Sheriff Wagner, Abney was found to have outstanding warrants in Arizona, California, and New York.

A firearm was reportedly recovered at the scene, according to NSP. During the incident, there were no injuries sustained by any officers.

According to Sheriff Wagner, Abney was not the focus of the original investigation that involved members of the task force.

The narcotics task force investigators declined to comment on whether Johnson was the initial target of their surveillance at the Super 8.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has been asked by LPD and NSP to lead the investigation into the incident. According to sources, both investigators have been put on administrative leave in compliance with the policy of their respective agencies.
