Walter Kye Herman Identified As Victim Killed Another Injured In Bryan County Shooting

An officer involved shooting in Bryan County is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has reported that an independent investigation has been requested by the Department of Public Safety. In a recent incident, a 29-year-old man identified as Walter Kye Herman from Ellabell, Georgia, lost his life while one officer sustained injuries.

According to preliminary information, a hit and run incident was witnessed by a Motor Carrier Compliance Division officer who happened to be at a convenience store near I-16 and highway 280. As the car was driving away, the officer followed it, with Herman behind the wheel. After a brief pursuit,

Herman brought the car to a stop. Upon arriving at Herman’s door, the officer engaged in conversation with him before proceeding to place handcuffs on him. As the officer was reaching inside the car,

Herman sped off. According to reports, the officer was dragged for approximately one-tenth of a mile. A road sign was struck by a car, causing it to veer off the road and travel down a steep embankment.

During the incident, the officer discharged his firearm, resulting in both himself and Herman being ejected from the vehicle. The car subsequently came to a halt.

At the scene, Herman was pronounced dead. The injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The investigation by the GBI is currently active and ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Atlantic Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further examination.

According to reports, the incident marks the 36th officer-involved shooting that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called upon to examine in 2023.
