An eight-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Burlington’s school parking lot, and a 21-year-old male has been accused.
Jayne Hounslow has been named as the victim by Halton Regional Police.
Around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to police, Jayne was struck by a white SUV in a lane between Central High School and Central Public School.
When the emergency personnel arrived, the child was awake and breathing, but he or she passed away soon after.
Although witnesses were able to report the license plate, police say the driver fled the scene. He was taken into custody close by, and a short while later, an SUV was seized.
According to the police, Jayne had just been dropped off at the parking lot entrance for a school theater performance on Wednesday night. She was struck as she crossed the driveway.
Burlington residents are in disbelief over the young girl’s hit-and-run killing.
People left flowers, balloons, teddy animals, and even a chocolate bar outside the school throughout the day.
Children at Burlington Central Elementary School and the secondary school next door received counseling on Thursday from the Halton District School Board.
The defendant, 21, was charged with failing to stop following a fatal accident, according to police, and additional charges may be forthcoming.
