On Thursday, May 4, at about 23:52, Danville police officers were called to the 1200 block of Chandler for a fight that was taking place. Dispatch informed officers that a gunshot had been fired during the altercation as they were responding.
Officers discovered a 33-year-old man who had been shot in the crotch area when they arrived. While paramedics were on the way, officers started providing treatment right away. The patient was sent to a local hospital, where he was later declared dead.
After speaking with local witnesses, police formed a suspect. Officers spotted the main suspect, Brandon A. Buford, 31, close to the crime scene.
Buford has been detained and is currently facing a first-degree murder charge. The Vermilion County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Christopher J. Smalls, 33, of Danville.
The investigation into this is still ongoing.
