In loving memory of Javon Kunkel, Viterbo student who died by suicide near Lincoln Middle School

Javon was scheduled to graduate with his Masters Degree just next week Saturday, May 13.

On Wednesday morning, a “traumatic scene” next to Lincoln Middle School prompted calls to La Crosse Police, emergency personnel, and School Resource Officers. President Rick Trietley of Viterbo University informed the faculty and staff that a student named Javon Kunkel had committed suicide.

In the letter, Trietley noted, among other things, “Javon’s family wanted to share with the community that Javon died by suicide and encourages anyone who may be struggling to seek support.”

Regarding the parties involved and the specifics of what happened, no additional information about the incident has been given.

The 600 block of 9th Street South scene was reported to Lincoln staff at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, although it did not occur at the school. As emergency personnel arrived, they provided assistance to the students inside the school.

“It is with sadness that we must inform you of an incident which occurred near our school this morning,” Lincoln/Coulee Montessori Principal Alex Hubing said in a letter to school families. “Lincoln Middle School administration were made aware of a traumatic scene on the 600 block of 9th St South.”

“This incident did not pose a threat to students, but we are aware that police incidents near school can be challenging for students to process. We are reaching out to any students or staff who may have witnessed this to offer care and support. Additional counseling support will be available at Lincoln Middle today and in the future if students need help.”

Kunkel was a student in the Master of Arts in Servant Leadership program. He was also on the track team.
