Jeremiah Wood Identified As Victim in Center Street Hit-And-Run
Authorities are seeking public assistance in finding a hit-and-run perpetrator who caused the death of Jeremiah Wood, a 45-year-old resident of New Iberia.
On Tuesday, New Iberia Police confirmed that they have located the vehicle involved in the fatal hit and run incident.
On Tuesday night, with the help of Louisiana State Police and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle was found in Baldwin.
In the early hours of May 1, 2023, at approximately 12:37 a.m., the New Iberia Police Department was called to the scene of a crash that occurred on Center Street (LA Highway 14) in the 1700 block. Upon their arrival, officers responding to the scene located a male victim who was lying on the ground. On scene, the victim received aid from Acadian Ambulance.
As per a representative of the Department, the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office declared the victim deceased on the spot, despite the employment of life-saving techniques.
According to the initial investigation, a vehicle traveling north on Center Street collided with a bicycle also traveling north, resulting in the victim being struck from behind.
According to police, the victim was reportedly thrown from the bicycle. As the vehicle proceeded northward on Center Street, the Department’s Traffic Unit personnel were dispatched to the location.
The suspect vehicle, a maroon 2018 Kia Optima with Louisiana license plate number 258EYF, was identified with the help of the public. According to reports, the vehicle is registered to a woman from Charenton, Louisiana.
In the collision, the passenger side mirror of the vehicle broke off. According to reports, the front passenger side of the vehicle sustained moderate damage.
According to a spokesperson, the bicycle involved in the incident had appropriate lighting. However, the victim was not wearing a helmet at the time.
