English actress Barbara Young died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge at the age of 92 on Thursday, 27th of April 2023. Young is known for her role as the future Emperor Nero’s mother, Agrippina, in the landmark 1976 BBC serial I, Claudius.
In addition, Young portrayed Miss Scatcherd in the 1970 adaptation of Jane Eyre, Eileen Clancy in the TV drama Looking for Clancy, Dot Wilmington in the drama Hazell, and participated in the BBC production of On Giant’s Shoulders in 1979.
In the soap opera Family Affairs, she had a long-running role as the gossipy but endearing Sadie Hargreaves Lloyd. Sadie, a former theater performer turned bartender, played a significant role in the series from 1998 until 2005, making her one of its most enduring characters.
Early 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s versions of Coronation Street included Young in acting roles. She returned to the Coronation Street cast in February 2007 and acted as Rita Sullivan’s longtime friend Doreen Fenwick until December of that same year.
